A family member helped elaborate on the cat and canary reference. Her long-term memory may be better than mine.

Give the cat another canary, hang the expense! 

According to Cambridge Dictionaries Online, this is used for saying that you ​want something so much that you do not ​care how much it ​costs.

We grew up in a humble home where luxuries were few. I think I heard Dad say this when Mother finally got her driver’s license at 54 years old and insisted they purchase a small car.

No canaries were harmed in posting this tidbit. No cats were treated to small, feathered critters either.
